We can’t even go two weeks after Pittsburg without another one of these? Fuck.

Reset the counter, and yet nothing will happen in the legislature.

5.5 miles away from my parents house. I get to sit on the other side of the country and study for a test while I wait to find out if I lost any friends.

I lost friends of friends in the Isla Vista shooting.
I lost friends of friends in the Vegas shooting.
I had family friends affected by the Pittsburgh shooting.
My half sister is a schoolteacher in CT a few towns over from Newtown.

I don’t even care about gun control arguments anymore, I just want it to stop. Sorry for the rant.

No apologies necessary, this is simply unfathomable and yet, it will continue to happen if not more often with our current social climate.

At this point I’m more shocked when I hear of 13 dead in an active war zone.

Yet nothing will be done in America , many will be shocked then government, etc... will offer thoughts and prayers, gun people will point out it wasn’t them as they are responsible gun owners and that good gun owners are needed because there are bad people out there (not appreciating that these bad people, up until the shooting were openly considered good people then had a really bad day or their intolerance of a certain group won out and they went out shooting people), the others will say it’s their right to bare arms as it’s in the constitution, some will say guns are ingrained into history and society,   etc, etc, etc....

I’m a hard-core 2nd Amendment guy, like “Cold Dead Hands” guy, and the good guy with a gun was a 29-year veteran of the police force and he was dead seconds after he went in. I totally support the idea that anyone who chooses to train and be proficient and accepts the responsibility that comes with carrying should do so. Maybe a good guy with a gun would have stopped the dude, but NOBODY with a lick of sense or responsibility carries a gun in a bar anyway.

I totally do not have a solution to this issue, because it’s so multi-layered. There are over 120 million law abiding gun owners with around 300 million guns in America, estimates ran ge from 10-20 million “assault rifles” in circulation. 299,999,990 of these guns were not used in a shooting spree.  The government is never going to just make this go away.  And all you have to do is look at Mexico or any South American country and see how easy it is to manufacture guns in a garage...  Anybody who really wants a gun will get one.  Or switch to bombs, or vehicles, etc.  So what do we do?

Mexicans don’t have to manufacture their own guns. They can just buy them at a gunshow in Arizona.

Pakistan, on the other hand, has an interesting gunsmithing industry.

C’mon Skyguy! Ever been to a gunshow? You need to pass a federal background check, which requires a valid American ID. I’m not saying one couldn’t go to a gunshow and find a straw pu rchaser, but one could do that anywhere in the country. Not matter what we do legislatively to make guns harder to get or own, criminals don’t much care for laws either way. Neither do crazy people. I could literally go anywhere in the United States and obtain a gun outside of the system in a day.

Mexico doesn’t need to get blackmarket guns from the US, although they do for some reason, since the Mexican Government is so corrupted by the cartels. They have military grade hardware, they don’t need a cheap Century Arms AK with canted sights and rattletrap magazines.

I’d encourage anybody who thinks more gun laws will somehow suddenly stop gun crime to google “homemade guns of Brazil” to see how easy it is, even in the face of total gun control, for anybody with some basic tools to manufacture a functional firearm. Hell, there’s blueprints and videos online right now to make Sten MkII submachine guns, how to make an AK out of a shovel, and you already know about the Pakistani market. Look up Khyber Pass AK for a mind blowing experience. If an illiterate cave dweller in Northern Afghanistan can make an AK-47 out of an easily smuggled parts kit... Imagine what an American with access to a Harbor Freight store could do...

Like I said, it’s a complicated issue and I think both sides have some real relfection to do because there’s a lot of moving parts here.  I think real mental health reform would be far more effective than knee-jerk legistalion to creat more gun laws when we don’t hardly enforce and truly punish violators of the laws we have on the books now...

It doesn’t sound like you too much experience buying or selling guns at gunshows in Arizona.

I have both sold, and bought guns as a non FFL holder at gun shows, and know for a fact you don’t have to pass any sort of check to buy guns private party in Arizona.

I also know for a fact you don’t have to pass any federal background check to buy a gun from an FFL in Arizona. They call DPS to see if you have a record or any warrants. You fill out a 4473 which usually stays in the store.

I have family in New York and New Jersey, and know for a fact you cannot do this anywhere in the country. Good luck being a straw buyer in my cousin’s town in New Jersey.

Whole lotta Arizona based guns show up in Mexico. Of course sometimes MCSO just lets their guns walk away...

This is the absolute scariest, worrisome, and truest statement. The fact that this is now ACCEPTED as daily life in this day and age is fucking disgusting.

That being said, I am the biggest supporter of private gun ownership. Mem ber at several ranges and organizations , and a collection of firearms to make anyone cringe . And I know we have a fucking problem. One that should have been dealt with 25 years ago. But how? Doing anything about gun issues is a political suicide for any politician. Maybe impose term limits? Then GET SHIT DONE. Seems to me politicians find ways stay in office only to back stab the other guy . Always looking to past, never to the future ( I can elaborate more on that if you want. ) I don’t know, but to me if a politician’s time i s limited, maybe they will take necessary risks to make a meaningful and worthwhile change.

I apologize for the language. Not usually me. Can I run for a higher office? I don’t know how to change things for the better, but I will at least TRY.

I’m so tired of the bullshit “anyone who wants it will get it” argument.

I don’t believe that’s inherently true. I hypothesize that much of the time these crimes can largely be attributed to convenience. If it took more work to get a weapon maybe some of these pieces of shit would just give up.

The problem is we won’t know which case is true unless we do something. Literally fucking ANYTHING.

But that’s the problem, isn’t it? All the law abiding, good natured gun owners refuse to even explore the possibility that their (mostly) unbridled access to weapons could be a problem. They won’t even try to change things because fuck it, it won’t work.

I don’t think anyone is truly asking for a one stop, single line item solution. It’s going to take attacking it from all fronts. But we won’t do a single god-damned thing again, and we’ll all have to wake up again to the story of another 10+ people murdered, where literally the only common thread is someone in the United States used a gun to shoot a bunch of people dead.

They essentially argue that anyone should be able to take a gun anywhere, but then get scared at their own events  that someone might have a gun.

So, as expected, the gunman turns out to be a guy who was obviously mentally ill, with numerous run-ins with the law and several visitis with mental health professionals, yet he was still out and about and free to be a murderer. Why is nobody talking about the fact that most, if not all, mass shooters are well known to the police and mental health communities, yet are still free because we have a system that will neither help nor lock up the crazies? Everybody wants to ban guns, control guns, blame the guns, etc, all of which infringe on the rights of millions of law-abiding folks, and will solve nothing, but nobody is talking about how since the sixties (when the hippies basically banned asylums where we could house the whackos away from the society that they pose a threat to) there is basically no real mental health system that can address actual psychos? Wanna hear a crazy story?

My best friend from high school turns out to be a schizophrenic. Years of run-ins and episodes, death threats, self-harm, the worst you can imagine when you think schizophrenic. One day, after all these years, he walks into his dad’s workplace and shoots his dad dead. Because he thought his dad was a government agent poisoning him to cover up what he kn ew about UFOs. A terrible day for all of us who grew up with his family. But they had countless chances to commit Brian to an institution, but we don’t do that anymore, we’re civilized now. To add insult to injury, Brian was found guilty but insane, sent to a state mental hospital for a 15 year sentence. H e’s out now, a free man, and only the medicine he takes (nobody to make him take it, so he could stop any time) keeps him from sliding off the edge again. I loved Brian like a brother, but he has demonstrated the capability and willingness to kill in a psychotic state he cannot control. That dude should have been committed to an institution two years before he killed hi s pops, and DEFINITELY should have been locked away forever after the crime. But the mental health system is so dysfunctional and gutted and underfunded that people just like Brian live right next door to you or I. Nearly all of the mass shooters have clear track records of mental illness or other warning flags that are intentionally ignored or seen but not addressed because their rights will be violated, there isn’t anywhere to put them, or some other poppycock.

All I’m saying is that while we’re on the subject of making fundamental changes to the Constitutional rights of gun owners, could we at least talk about making fundamental changes to the mental health system too?  I’ll meet you in the middle, I promise, but while we institute stricter gun laws, could we also institute stricter criteria for how we handle crazy people?

Just go into massive debt, it’s the American way. It took me more than a decade to pay off my loans, and I didn’t have as much as many others. That’s the biggest flaw in he system.

I also believe the inflated price of schooling is hindering socio-economic mobility - those most likely able to pay for school come from affluent backgrounds to begin with.

Yes but no one in office has actually taken steps to do anything about mental health. Except perhaps the push by some towards universal healthcare or at least affordable healthcare, another one of those things the party that oft protects gun owners is against.

So per the non-moderate right we should a) not give people access to affordable healthcare and b) not restrict gun ownership. At what point are we doing anything then?

Again, as I said before, the only true common denominator in all this is the weapon. Yes, the guy was mentally ill, but of course we’ll say that now because he murdered 12 people . Regardless of the extent to which he had been diagnosed or determined to be mentally ill in the first place, he had access to guns. He was able to get a gun and go into a club and kill 12 people.

Fuck, dude. I cannot stress how tired I am of having this conversation over, and over, and over again. What the fuck is it about guns that makes people so god damn defensive of them?! I don’t think ANYONE is actually arguing that NO ONE should be able to get a gun. If you want to go hunting fuck it, have fun. But is it really that much to ask that it’s maybe difficult enough to get a gun that someone like this crazy asshole can’t?

That’s where these arguments always end. With people like you saying “UR TAKIN MAH RIGHTS AWAY”, suggesting solutions that you won’t actually act on (because you aren’t going to vote for someone that diverts taxpayer money towards mental healthcare), refusing to admit that maybe, JUST MAYBE, allowing any fucking insane or sane person to walk into a god damn Walmart and buy a gun (YES I KNOW ITS MORE DIFFICULT BUT CRIMINALS WILL FIND A WAY RIGHT?!) is a fucking problem.

Man, fuck the whole thing. The Constitution was designed to be changed. The fuckin’ rule that lets you have a fuckin’ gun is an ammendment to the Constitution. It was created fucking 200 years ago when a gun was freaking muzzle loaded. Is it so much to ask that we even just *think* about coming up with a better way to handle things?
